  1. Find and repair the source of the moisture
  2. Remove the decayed wood
  3. Apply an appropriate fungicide to exposed surfaces to discourage growth of microscopic fungi and spores
  4. Apply a moisture barrier to the new wood before it's installed.
  5. Install the new, protected wood.
